Munich in marathon fever: a weekend of records and emotion

MAKE IT YOURS. RUN MUNICH.
What a weekend. Munich has shown once again just how much enthusiasm for running there is in this city. From the first gun on Friday to marathon Sunday itself, people were running, cheering and celebrating out on the streets.
With more than 40,000 entries for the first time and around 37,800 active participants from 130 nations, the MARATHON MÜNCHEN by Brooks set a new record. One figure stands out in particular: entries for the classic marathon distance have almost doubled compared to last year, to 12,300.
World-class performances on Munich’s streets
In the men’s race, Ethiopia’s Alazar Terefa took the marathon win with a personal best of 2:10:51 hours. In the women’s race, Nina Reuter successfully defended last year’s title in 2:32:01 hours, leading an all-German podium.
The Sport Schuster Halbmarathon by Brooks and the 10 KM Run also saw international fields produce fast times and close racing.
A running event that captivates the whole city
The three-day Runners Festival on Hans-Jochen-Vogel-Platz in the Olympic Park complemented the sporting programme with music, entertainment and plenty of hands-on activities. With more than 100,000 visits, it became a central meeting point of the marathon weekend.
Munich runs together
Over the running weekend, €9,338 was raised for Special Olympics Bayern and €7,984 for Münchner Tafel. The Bavarian Athletics Association received a further €10,000 in support.
Munich, what a running weekend that was.
