MAKE IT YOURS. RUN MUNICH.

A marathon is more than just a race. But what happens once the finish line is far behind you — how does your heart find its way back into rhythm after 42.195 kilometers? That is exactly what the HEART-BEAT study is investigating, and the MARATHON MÜNCHEN by Brooks is taking part as a study site — together with the German Heart Center of the Charité (DHZC) and the Department of Preventive Sports Medicine and Sports Cardiology at TU München.

HEART-BEAT is a multicenter study conducted at marathon events in Munich, Cologne, Dresden and Berlin/Brandenburg. It focuses on the post-race recovery phase, which has received little scientific attention so far — and you can actively contribute.
What you get out of participating:

  • An ECG patch weighing around 10 grams records your heart rhythm for up to 14 days around the marathon — comfortable to wear and barely noticeable while running, showering or sleeping.
  • After the study, you will receive a personal analysis of your heart rhythm and recovery behavior — free of charge.
  • You help to better understand the connections between exertion, recovery and heart health in endurance sports.

Anyone registered for the marathon distance at the MARATHON MÜNCHEN by Brooks on October 11, 2026 can take part. Age, gender and pre-existing conditions do not matter. Places per study site are limited and allocated in order of registration. Participation poses no health risk. All data is evaluated in pseudonymized form.

All information and registration can be found on the official study website.

Extra at the Munich site: With HEARTBEAT-TROP, the Department of Preventive Sports Medicine and Sports Cardiology at TU München is additionally investigating a laboratory method to distinguish genuinely elevated cardiac markers (troponins) from falsely elevated values after the race. Participants aged 18 and over without pre-existing conditions receive a free preventive cardiac check-up (blood sample, ECG, cardiac ultrasound).
